A1 Team Canada - Carpentier solid in China practice
Official Practice, Round 11 - A1 Grand Prix of Nations, Shanghai, China
A1 Team Canada's Patrick Carpentier racked up a total of 40 practice laps today at the Shanghai
International Circuit in China as he prepares to compete in the 11th and final round of the inaugural
A1 Grand Prix of Nations this Sunday, 2nd April.
Making his third consecutive start for A1 Team Canada, following points scoring runs in both Mexico
and the USA, Carpentier's trip to China is a first for the Québec-born racer but he was quickly up to
speed in the first of two hour-long practice sessions on the 5.45km Shanghai circuit, setting the fifth
fastest time with a 1m52.989s lap.
While the weather looked somewhat menacing during the second session, Patrick kept Canada in the
front-running pack, setting the seventh fastest time as he continued to familiarize himself with the track
searching for a balance of grip for the corners and speed for the long straights. With a changeable
forecast set for tomorrow's qualifying runs, the team was satisfied with today's running in the dry.
Patrick Carpentier:
"I'm very happy with today's practice results. For me it's a large improvement and we're just four
tenths off the fastest cars. It's a beautiful, fast circuit and I'm looking forward to racing here on
Sunday. Our objective is to qualify in the top-ten so then there will be ten less cars for me to pass from
previous races! We've started the weekend well and if we keep the momentum going we'll be up with
the leaders by the end of it!"

Carhartt™ Racing Has Resigned American, Marc Miller for 2006 CASCAR Season

Courtesy Racesportz – Karen Barsoski
DEARBORN, MI (March 28, 2006) --- Holland, MI native, Marc Miller, will return as the driver of the #8 Carhartt Racing entry for the 2006 CASCAR Super Series. The sole American in the series will pilot the RaceSportz/DJK Racing prepared Carhartt Dodge Charger in a limited schedule in 2006.
“I am very proud to be back representing Carhartt again this year,” said Miller. “This will be my fourth season with Carhartt as our primary sponsor and they have been terrific to us as we continue to grow our program. We have essentially a new car coming out of the DJK Racing shop that should be right there with the best in the series. It is now important to get out and start testing as soon as possible.”
The all-new Carhartt #8 Dodge Charger was debuted at the 2006 Toronto Sportsmen’s Show this past weekend at Exhibition Place in Toronto. The car showcases an aggressive new paint scheme for 2006 and was a very popular addition to the Carhartt, Inc. booth that saw over 125,000 spectators pass by over the five days of the show.
“We felt it would be a great opportunity to have our Carhartt CASCAR on display at this show,” said Field Marketing Specialist for Carhartt, Jason Reynolds. “Some of Carhartt’s most loyal customers are avid sportsmen as well as race fans and I think we even under-estimated the response from having the car on display. We are looking forward to having Marc back in the seat this season and hope to see him put the Carhartt Racing machine up front.”
The season will see Miller and his team compete in some of the largest events on the CASCAR schedule including the hugely popular Grand Prix of Edmonton ( www.grandprixedmonton.com), the GP of Trois Rivieres (www .gp3r.com) and four additional venues that are expected to draw over 300,000 spectators combined.

Team Royal Shines in Kitchener Sun - Hayden Perfect!

The CSRA series made its annual trek south to Kitchener's Chicopee ski hill, and the weather was as expected, warm! Saturdays events were marred by some rainy weather, but the facilities at Chicopee allowed fans to view from inside and covered porches. Team Royal Distributing / Factory Recreation boys were hungry to get back on the track after two weeks off. The Royal Ski Doo Rev's found their familiar spots on Saturdays qualifiers, with Joey Sagan running firsts and seconds all day in his Pro Stock and Semi Pro Open heats. Pro Iain Hayden was right back where he left off, winning all his Saturday qualifiers.
On Sunday the weather was warm and sunny and the huge Kitchener crowd was in for some great racing. Semi Pro Joey Sagan retained his solid points lead in the 440 Stock class with strong second place run. In Semi Pro Open Joey fought hard with a charging Open class field to come home third, with a very impressive ride. Pro racer Hayden got excellent starts from the Wayne Legge tuned machines in both Stock 440 and the headlining Pro Open class and never looked back, nailing down wins in both classes.
Iain was able to maintain his points leads in both classes. Hayden is now a perfect 14 for 14 on the season in CSRA finals. The last race is a National coming up this weekend at Craighurst, plan to attend! Visit http://www.snowcross.com/ for details. Watch all the top racers battle it out for the titles.

Dirty talker... one more outburst like that and he'll be on probation!

Obviously, Mr. Manion never heard George Carlin's routine about the seven words you can't say on TV ....
****
Family advocates are revving up against Fox Television and NASCAR after a driver's crew chief uttered the S-word during a nationally broadcast race Sunday.
The obscene word was aired during a car-to-crew conversation between driver Martin Truex, Jr. and his crew chief, Kevin Manion, at the Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, Tenn.
A frustrated Manion told his driver, "We missed the set-up today. It (the car) was a piece of s---." (To hear the audio, click here)

Carl Spiering’s day ends with crash at IHRA Texas event

MARION, TX (March 26, 2006) – Carl Spiering’s day ended abruptly Sunday when he crashed the Carl Spiering Motorsports Eaton Electrical Supercharged Pro Modified Chevrolet Corvette in the quarter finals at the Amalie Oil Texas Nationals in the International Hot Rod (IHRA) eMax Drag Racing Series at San Antonio Raceway San Antonio, Texas.
In the second round of Torco Race Fuels Pro Modified eliminations, Spiering, 41, of Jordan Station, ON took on number six qualifier Kenny Lang from Grande Pointe, MB with a 1953 Chevrolet Corvette. Lang had the quicker light and was out in front at the 660-foot marker.
But after that, Spiering pulled ahead and was out in front when they passed the 1,000-foot marker. Spiering's car drifted left out of the groove and came close to hitting the outside wall of the left lane. As he tried to get back into the groove, Spiering crossed over the center line after the finish line, running over to the other side of the track and hit the wall on the outside of the right lane. The cars did not hit but Lang waited to deploy his parachutes, making sure he got by Spiering's car, and by not getting the chutes open early enough, he coasted into the sand at the end of the track.
Spiering ran a 6.299-second, 207.98 mph pass for the win. With his car crossing the center line after the finish line, he was declared winner of the round. Spiering was unable to make the call for the semi final round, which gave the win into the finals to the 1963 Corvette of Tommy D'Aprile’s from Port Charlotte FL.
Spiering defeated Jason Hamstra from Demotte, IN in the first round of eliminations with a 6.179-second, 231.64 mph run. Hamstra was in the field as an alternate for number two qualifier Scott Cannon Jr from Lyman, SC who Spiering was scheduled to run before Cannon crashed in the final qualifying session Saturday night.
Glen Kerunsky from Priddis, AB won the Torco Race Fuels Pro Modified Championship at the Amalie Oil Texas Nationals over Tommy D'Aprile from Port Charlotte, FL.
The next International Hot Rod (IHRA) eMax Drag Racing Series event of the season the 36th Annual Spring National presented by Advance Auto Parts will take place April 21-23 at Rockingham Dragway in Rockingham, North Carolina. McIntosh up to speed in World Series by Renault testing
Barcelona, Spain (March 24, 2006) – Sean McIntosh’s first official outing for Team KTR in the World Series by Renault ended successfully yesterday with the 20-year-old Canadian posting the sixth fastest time, from a field of 30 cars, in testing at Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya.
The two-day Spanish test marked the start of Sean’s regular 2006 commitments following a series of impressive performances over the winter, including a memorable last-to-first victory in Indonesia, racing for A1 Team Canada in the A1 Grand Prix of Nations.
Learning the characteristics of his new-spec. 425bhp, 3.5-litre Dallara Renault and the 4.73km Circuit de Catalunya, home to the Spanish Grand Prix, Sean spent Wednesday’s sessions getting to grips with both while forging his relationship with the Belgium-based crew from Team KTR.
Running predominantly on used Michelin’s, Sean’s attempts to bang in a ‘flier’ on fresh rubber towards the end of the afternoon were thwarted by a series of red flags but the 2005 Formula Renault UK Vice- Champion was suitably pleased with the progress made on day one.
Thursday’s sessions allowed Sean to further settle into his new surroundings and he reeled off a total of 60 laps over the two sessions. Setting a fastest time of 1m27.714s in the morning he then bettered this with a 1m27.624s in the afternoon to finish the test sixth overall on the timesheets and a place ahead of KTR team-mate, Britain’s Robbie Kerr.
Sean McIntosh: “We made real progress throughout Thursday and the afternoon session in particular was pretty tidy. I’m starting to develop a relationship with my engineer, Paul Heath. These things always take a bit of time but I think we’re starting to click already which is encouraging. I’m getting a feel for the car now and can start to make changes to it so I’m looking forward to seeing what we can do next time out at Le Mans.”
Kurt Mollekens – Team Manager: “Overall I’m quite satisfied with this week’s Barcelona test. By the first race meeting at Zolder we want to aim higher but there were factors to consider for both Robbie and Sean, chiefly neither had tested the new World Series by Renault car and they hadn’t been to Barcelona before, a fairly challenging circuit physically. Our aim for this test was for both drivers to learn as much as possible and go for quality running, we’ll hit qualifying mode at a later stage. We’re all happy as a team, the guys set competitive times and we’ll look for more of the same when we go to Le Mans.”
The historic Le Mans Circuit in France hosts the next pre-season test, 1st-2nd April, before the World Series by Renault kicks off in earnest with the opening two rounds at Zolder in Belgium, 29th-30th April. ROCKETSPORTS RACING TO RUN ANTONIO PIZZONIA IN LONG BEACH FOR CHAMP CAR SEASON OPENER
EAST LANSING, Mich. (March 29, 2006) After a long off-season with all efforts predominately on securing a solid sponsorship package and competitive driver line-up, Rocketsports Racing is proud to announce that Antonio Pizzonia has been signed to drive the #8 Rocketsports Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone Champ Car in Long Beach with sponsorship announcements to be forthcoming.
The overall performance of Rocketsports Racing throughout the 2005 season led to Timo Glock s consistency and running for Rookie-of-the-Year honors. Rocketsports has chosen to run another rookie, but rookie is no way to describe this young, vibrant Brazilian. Pizzonia is a well-experienced open-wheel racer. He has a solid racing pedigree that has brought him to the ranks of Formula 1. The 25-year-old joins Rocketsports with great anticipation to extend his racing resume by entering the Champ Car World Series in search for a new challenge in his extensive career.
Pizzonia will rendezvous with the team in Houston on Saturday, April 1 for some more time in his Lola in preparation to make his first Champ Car start in Long Beach, California for the Champ Car season opener, April 7-9.
I am very happy about the opportunity that Rocketsports has given to me, said Pizzonia on his upcoming test and making his debut in Champ Car. The test this weekend will be very important for me and the team as we prepare for the first race. I obviously need to get more familiar with the car, as it was my first time in the cockpit of a Champ Car when I tested with the team in Houston a couple of weeks ago. So the extra time will be good for me to learn more and really prepare for Long Beach. I am really looking forward to Long Beach; it will be a new experience for me, a new ride, and a new challenge. That is what I was looking for and I am thrilled to be with the Rocketsports team. I really enjoyed working with them in Houston when I tested with them, so I am looking forward to working with them again.
Pizzonia started racing karts when he was 10 and after winning the local championships he began to commute to Sao Paulo on the weekends to race in more competitive Sao Paulo championships. By the time he was 15, he had won the Brazilian national title. This led to the decision to go to the United States to compete in the Barber Dodge series and then in 1997 he moved to Britain.
OK, let me get this straight. You're offering me THIS piece of land for 48 years at $750Gs a year? Where do I sign?

The annual cash lease payment, excluding applicable sales taxes, of $500,000 for 2007 will increase every five years, resulting in an average annual cash payment over the 48-year (2007-2054) period of approximately $750,000.
The original lease provided for annual cash payments of $10,000 per year through 2007, increasing to $20,000 per year from 2008 through 2032....
Just got off the phone....
She said that event has yet to be confirmed. There are no tickets for sale.
She chuckled when I told her that it's on the ChampCar website at www.cart.com
She said there is no schedule for announcing whether or not the race will take place.
Might not want to give a credit card when reserving a room for this one....

CANADIAN RACER ANDREW RANGER BEGINS TESTING SESSIONS AS EFFORTS CONTINUE TO SECURE SPONSORSHIP FOR FULL CHAMP CAR SEASON
While Ranger runs testing laps on Wednesday and Thursday, efforts will continue to secure additional sponsorship that will enable the 19-year-old Roxton Pond, Quebec driver to compete in a full Champ Car schedule. Ranger is currently set to race in the season opener at Long Beach, California, on April 9, as well as the three Canadian stops on the schedule, in Toronto (July 9), Edmonton (July 23) and Montreal (Aug. 27).
"It's still very much a work in progress," said Ranger's agent Alan Labrosse. "Thus far, we have managed to put together a package for the four races, but the ultimate goal is to give Andrew an opportunity to showcase his considerable talent and be able to contend for the championship. Andrew is one of the most promising young talents in the series, along with being a fine ambassador and spokesperson for his sponsors, and it would be unfortunate to see the career of a rising Canadian star compromised in this manner."
Procter & Gamble Canada, a partner from day one through its Tide brand, has taken the lead in supporting Andrew's career. Other key partners for the 2006 season include Folgers, Kodak, Duracell, Kellogg Canada and Sharpie.
"I can't say enough about the tremendous support from P&G Canada and their belief in Andrew both on and off the track," said Labrosse. "They have been instrumental in bringing other sponsors on board, but we need to find more partners who share the same commitment and vision."
Despite the uncertainty that surrounds his full-season status for the 2006 Champ Car season, Ranger is looking forward to putting his Mi-Jack Conquest car through its paces and providing the crew with feedback to help the fine-tuning process leading up to the season-opener.
"My focus is always on the competitive side of it, and I leave the business part to my agent," said Ranger. "Last year, we had a goal to finish in the top 10, and we managed to achieve that. I've spent several years climbing the racing ranks in pursuit of my dream and I'm hoping, for myself and everyone who has supported me that I'll be able to keep it going."
Ranger burst quickly from the starting line when he garnered his first podium in only his second race when he drove to a second-place finish in Monterrey, Mexico, becoming the youngest driver ever to earn a Champ Car podium. He recorded five other top-10 finishes on the way to a 140-point season. At the tender age of 18, Ranger finished second to the seasoned Timo Glock in the series' rookie standings.

ASN Canada FIA Announce Prize Fund Support for the Canadian Civic Championship Series
ASN's President Roger Peart, "In keeping with our vision of helping young Canadians move up the ladder of Canadian motorsport, ASN Canada FIA is pleased to support CASC-OR and FSAQ, the co-organizing sanctioning bodies, in their effort to make this series a success. To ensure its success we are providing direct support to the drivers with a monetary award to the Championship. A total of $6,000 will be contributed and distributed among the top 3 finishers in the Championship at year's end."
The series promoters were pleased with the announcement by ASN's President Roger Peart but are continuing their efforts to secure more sponsorship for the series.
"We are delighted with this announcement," said Gunter Schmidt, administrator of the series. "We are continuing to build on the present by promoting the series, and also working hard to assure the growth of the Civic series by adding the 2006 and 2007 Honda Civic models in to the 2007 racing season in order to increase participation of the drivers."
This type of single-marque car racing Championship has seen Canadian drivers like Ron Follows, David Empringham, Richard Spénard, Frank Allers, Jacques Villeneuve the elder, and more recently Kuno Wittmer, coming through the ranks on their way to making their mark on the national and international motorsport scene.
About the Series
The Championship demonstrates motorsport competitiveness in a single-marque championship series for up-and-coming as well as seasoned drivers. The concept of the Civic Championship is a cost-effective, competitive series emphasizing development of individual driver skills by permitting only minimal car modifications. In keeping with this concept, the Honda Civic DX Coupes, Honda Accessories and the products of the sponsors used in the Championship must be identifiable with the cars and offered for sale to the public through normal distribution channels.
***
The Canadian Civic Championship Series opens its 2006 season on April 29 at Autodrome St-Eustache in Québec. The eight-race schedule also includes events at Mosport International Raceway on May 22 and June 18, and at the Canadian Grand Prix on Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve on June 24. The final four races of the 2006 season will be held at Shannonville Motorsport Park on July 16, Autodrome St-Eustache on July 22, Circuit Mont-Tremblant on September 24 and at the season finale at Mosport on October 1.

TSN: Pass the hat for Andrew Ranger
Alan Labrosse says they currently have enough funds for the 19 year old to take part in the season opening race in Long Beach plus the three Canadian events on the schedule - Toronto, Edmonton and Montreal.
Labrosse says they hope use this week's two-day test session in Fontana to try and attract additional sponsors.
"It's still very much a work in progress," said Labrosse. "Thus far, we have managed to put together a package for the four races, but the ultimate goal is to give Andrew an opportunity to showcase his considerable talent and be able to contend for the championship."
Currently Ranger has support from P & G Canada while Folgers, Kodak, Duracell, Kellogg Canada and Sharpie have signed on for 2006.
"I can't say enough about the tremendous support from P&G Canada and their belief in Andrew both on and off the track," said Labrosse. "They have been instrumental in bringing other sponsors on board, but we need to find more partners who share the same commitment and vision."

TSN: Minardi set to return.... Renault quakes in fear
Stoddart sold the rights to his F1 franchise last year to Red Bull boss Dietrich Mateschitz, who renamed the team Scuderia Toro Rosso in 2006.
However, Stoddart says he retained the rights to the Minardi name and the intellectual property rights to the PS04 cars build in 2004.
"I've lodged myself an entry as European Minardi F1 team Limited," Stoddart tells Reuters.
"We've got the cars we ran in Melbourne last year, we've got the team and we've got the facility," he added.
Stoddart admits the entry might be a long shot, depending on how many teams file an entry by the end of this week.
If the current 11 teams all submit an entry - which is likely at this point - then that would leave just one opening under the 2008 proposals approved by the World Motor Sport Council last week. FIA president Max Mosley has indicated that three to four groups have expressed interest in entering a team under the new cost-cutting rules.
Stoddart, who was a thorn in Mosley's side when he was an F1 owner, says being away from the sport is much harder than he expected.
"I miss it, and I miss it badly," he tells The Age newspaper in Australia. "I would like to think that all kinds of opportunities could be there, if not in '06 or '07 but in '08."
Despite the fact that Stoddart would get back into the sport under new rules crafted by his nemesis aimed at independent teams entering F1, he is still critical of the way Mosley has gone about pushing through changes.
"I am kind of sad to see that the politics are worse than they have everbeen at any time," Stoddart said. "I had hoped we would get to a point where we would see a new Concorde Agreement signed and unity between the independents and the manufacturers and Bernie Ecclestone and the banks but sadly at this time, we have Mad Max (Mosley) back in charge."
Stoddart, who made his fortune in the aviation business, recently suspended operation of his business airline Oz Jet less than four months after launching the service in Australia.
The cold, hard truth
Miller takes no pleasure in criticizing the deceased, but it backs up comments from other racers who said that Dana and other ride-buyers have no business jumping into "IRL missiles" based simply on their ability to raise sponsorship.

It sounds like Petey's clean run at Homestead might be the ticket to get NASCAR's approval to allow him to make his NASCAR debut in a Roush Truck at Gateway (1.25-mile) at the end of April.

"I think I'd have probably whupped Kurt Busch before now."
"Obviously, he forgot about getting punched in the nose last time by Jimmy Spencer."
"I'd still like to whip his ass. Before the year's over, he'll make a fool out of Roger Penske... I shouldn't have said that, either. It's hard not to pick on a guy when his ears are pinned back."

MILWAUKEE MILE INSTALLS LATEST VERSION OF SAFER BARRIERS IN TIME FOR 2006
Milwaukee, Wis. (March 22, 2006) - The Milwaukee Mile has taken another step in the direction of recent safety and facility improvements, with the installation of the SAFER Barrier System, an energy-dissipating system that has been fastened to the speedway's existing concrete wall.
SAFER, an acronym for Steel And Foam Energy Reduction Barrier System, is constructed of a hollow steel impact plate, buffered with polystyrene foam blocks.
The latest version of the SAFER Barrier is being placed this week, which allows the most recent technology in energy-absorbing materials to be placed in the turns of America's Legendary Oval to minimize the forces of impact in the case of a wall contact accident during a Champ Car, NASCAR, IRL IndyCar Series or ARCA RE/MAX Series competition, in addition to providing additional safety for the many other factions of Motorsports that compete at The Mile.
The Milwaukee Mile is located on the Wisconsin State Fair grounds and is owned by the State of Wisconsin. The Mile was granted approval by the Wisconsin State Building Commission to provide $1.2 million in non-tax supported bonding for multiple improvements, with $1 million tabbed for SAFER Barrier System installation. The funds were approved by the state of Wisconsin in 2005, prior to the mid-December approval f Milwaukee Mile Holdings LLC as the race promoter rights holder for the next 18 years.
With the signature of approval by Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle in place, SAFER Barrier System work had begun in earnest on this $1 million improvement project just last week, with a projected completion date of
April 1, 2006, in time for track testing and the speedway's diverse 2006 racing schedule.
"With the new grandstands in place for the 2003 season, the spectators and participants at The Milwaukee Mile have seen vast improvements in the interest of safety and comfort. The installation of the SAFER Barrier
System is the next step to provide a safer racing environment at the world's oldest operating speedway," said Milwaukee Mile Holdings LLC chairman Craig Stoehr.
The installation is being done by Elrod Corporation, based in Mooresville, Indiana. Elrod is the only licensed and approved manufacturer and installer of the SAFER Barrier System. By contract, Elrod personnel will be on-hand for at least the first weekend of competition at The Milwaukee Mile, the Time Warner Cable Road Runner 225 Champ Car World Series race weekend June 2-4.
"We are pleased to be involved with America's Legendary Oval, and the installation of the SAFER Barrier System. Elrod Corporation is committed to the highest safety standards, and are installing the most current materials and technology available, to ensure the storied racing tradition at The Milwaukee Mile continues in the safest manner possible," said Elrod Corporation senior project manager Jason Turk.
Overseeing the track operations of this project are Gary Girard, chief operating officer of The Milwaukee Mile and Jeff Jacobson, engineer for Wisconsin State Fair Park.
"With virtually every weekend between May and September booked with track activities - from karting to club racing to our four major race weekends - the installation of the SAFER Barrier System provides a safer environment for all of our participants racing on our oval track," said Girard.

Boland looking for strong PMRA season

Courtesy Bruce F. Mehlenbacher
HAMILTON, ON (March 22, 2006) – With a new engine package and a strong showing in the final round of last year’s series, Hamilton’s Bruce Boland is looking to improve his performance in the upcoming Pro Modified Racing Association (PMRA), www.ProModifiedRacing.com, season.
“Regrettably, we missed one PMRA event last year”, said Boland, who has raced in the Pro Mod ranks since 1995. “That was unfortunate when you look back at it now. That one event would have moved us into at least second place in the points.”
Boland, in the Excel Motorsports and Pro Racing Fuels-sponsored entry, won the final Pro Modified Racing Association event at Lancaster Raceway Park late in 2005. He placed fifth in the 2005 PMRA standings.
The B&B Racing entry, owned by John Wilks is powered by a new 526-cubic inch Alan Johnson power plant, a Blower Drive Service (BDS) Supercharger, and a Waterman fuel system, all united to a Lenco three-speed transmission with Crower clutch.
"We have upgraded to a new Alan Johnson engine which will give us some extra horsepower,” Boland, driver of the B&B Racing 526-cubic inch–powered 1933 Willys, added. "Our plan is to run all of the PMRA events and selected Super Chevy Shows in ’06.”
The PMRA has five events confirmed for the 2006 season, the KC Auto Parts Family Day Celebration at Toronto Motorsports Park in Cayuga, ON, Saturday, June 24, at Lancaster Raceway Park in Clarence, NY on September 15 and the Pro Modified Racing Association is pleased to be running inaugural events at St. Thomas Dragway in Sparta, ON, August 5 and 6, the Eaton PMRA Challenge at Sanair near Montreal scheduled for Saturday, August 19, and at the Grand Bend Motorplex, over the Labor Day weekend.

I just heard about this yesterday while in a meeting with Don Baker of Lucas Oil.... What a great idea!
On Friday, June 9 at Flamboro Speedway (and running overnight until the morning of Saturday, June 10), the track will play host to the Canadian Cancer Society's "Relay for Life". The relay will feature teams of 10 walkers, who will be on the track for 12 hours as they raise money to help fight cancer.

SEBRING VICTORY FOR MULTIMATIC TEAM PANOZ

Sebring - FL (March 18th, 2006) Multimatic Motorsports Team Panoz has dominated the opening round of 2006 American Le Mans Series, the #50 Panoz Esperante GTLM of David Brabham, Scott Maxwell and Sebastien Bourdais winning the GT2 class in the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring.
Despite tough challenges from the Ferrari, Porsche and BMW opposition, the #50 Panoz Esperante led 178 of the 320 laps completed – spending seven hours and 22 minutes in the race lead.
Two-time Champ Car World Series champion Sebastien Bourdais battled a late-race gearbox issue as he completed the final stint, finishing 5.365 seconds ahead of the Porsche of Mark Lieb, Jon Fogarty and Johannes van Overbeek.
The Ferrari 430 GT Berllinetta of Anthony Lazarro, Ralf Kelleners and Jamie Melo finished third.
Brabham led the race for the opening 69 minutes before the first round of pit stops. The new Ferrari loomed as the toughest opposition for the Panoz squad as the lead changed repeatedly during the pit stop cycle for the opening seven and half hours of the race.
The Panoz began to assert its authority in the late afternoon when Bourdais passed the Ferrari after seven hours and 36 minutes.
From that point on, the Toronto-based Multimatic Panoz squad dominated the event – spending stints of 52, 56, 57 and 52 minutes in the lead – only losing top spot during each round of pit stops.
Panoz veteran David Brabham spent a total of 78 laps in the race lead, followed by Bourdais with 55 and Maxwell with 45. The victory was Brabham's eleventh class victory in the history of the American Le Mans Series, the second for Maxwell and Bourdais's first.
Brabham's GT2 victory today was his third Sebring Twelve Hour success – backing up his GT1 win with Aston Martin from last year and the 1998 Panoz GT prototype victory.
"This is an outstanding start for this program, I am just so proud of everybody involved," Multimatic Vice President and Motorsports Technical Director, Larry Holt said.
"Don and Danny Panoz have entrusted us with this program and to start the season with a victory – especially at such a tough race like Sebring is outstanding.
"I was confident we had the speed, but the reliability the car showed today is a real credit to our guys on the crew. David, Scott and Sebastien did a brilliant job all day and it feels great to be leading the championship after the opening round.
"It would have been nice to had two cars running strong at the finish, but Sebring can be a real car breaker. Gunnar and Tom showed they have the pace to challenge strongly this year and it’s a real pity for Bruno he didn't get more laps in his first sportscar race.
"We had a great battle today against Porsche, Ferrari and BMW but the Panoz Esperante again showed it is an outstanding car both on the road and on the track."
While the #50 Panoz trio got to spray champagne on the podium, the Sebring event as a bitter-sweet day for team-mates Gunnar Jeannette, Tom Milner and Bruno Junqueira.
After showing impressive pace early in the race, the car lost rear drive after two hours, 36 minutes – leaving Junqueira stranded on course and putting the car out of the event.
For Multimatic, the win joins the 2000 P2 24 Hours of Le Mans victory and the 2003 Daytona Prototype, Rolex 24 at Daytona successes as major highlights for the Canadian squad.
Today's Sebring success was the second ever American Le Mans Series round victory for the Panoz Esperante and the second Twelve Hours of Sebring class win for the brand.
The #50 Panoz Esperante today finished 9th outright in the 54th running of the annual Sebring event which was won overall by the new diesel-powered Audi R10 of Tom Kristensen, Dindo Capello and Alan McNish.
The next race on the schedule for the new championship-leading Multimatic Motorsports Team Panoz squad will be the Lone Star Grand Prix in Houston from May 11-13.
Paulsen, C&R Racing Announces New House Driver of the C&R Special – PJ Jones
INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Chris Paulsen, President & Owner C&R Racing, Inc., announces today that PJ Jones will drive the C&R house car for the 2006 USAC Silver Crown Series presented by K&N.
“I’m very excited to have PJ in our car, the C&R Racing Special,” states Paulsen. “At this point it is a one race deal, he will race for us at the Homestead-Miami Speedway. PJ is a great driver that will give our car a good run he can race anything anywhere. He stands on the gas and that is certainly the style I like.”
Jones, no stranger to USAC Silver Crown racing, has twelve career starts and four top ten finishes with three top five finishes. PJ’s inaugural race was August 4, 1994 where he claimed the pole and the victory at Indianapolis Raceway Park; a career best for him in the USAC Silver Crown Series. Jones also has 2 midget car victories and 16 USAC Western Series Midget Car Series victories, tying him with Rusty Rasmussen. PJ also has an established racing career in NASCAR Busch and Truck Series, Champ Car, Score Off-Road, IMSA GTP and the former Indy Lights Series.
The decision to run Jones came after C&R made the decision to no longer run Shane Hmiel. NASCAR recently suspended Hmiel for life.
Chris unaware of the ban until the official announcement made by NASCAR, “I’m still fact finding on the details, I continue to believe Shane is a good kid and a heck of a racer. My concern is what is best for Shane and his family and it just isn’t the time to put Shane in a race car.” Chris continues, “When deciding on the original driver for the C&R Racing Special PJ was always at the top of my list. I’ve known PJ for a long time and watched his racing career evolve, I made the call, he was available and I happy to have him on our team. I’m looking forward to working with PJ and the race at Homestead-Miami Speedway.”
C&R did not run the house car at the season opener, the historical Copper World Classic. Four of the twelve cars that ran Copper World were a C&R chassis. C&R Racing proved the power of the C&R Silver Crown chassis with our teams claiming pole, leading all race laps, and winning the race. Drivers powering behind the wheel of a C&R Silver Crown chassis at Copper World were Brian Tyler #21 (pole), Dave Steele #1 (race winner), Jerry Coons Jr. #99, and Tim Barber #28.
C&R continues to be the preferred builder and supplier to NASCAR Nextel Cup teams and supplies products to several of NASCAR Busch and Craftsman Truck Series teams, as well as teams from the Indy Racing League IndyCar Series, Champ Car, USAC Silver Crown, National Sprint and Midget Car Series, and top Off-Road Racing teams.
The Homestead-Miami event is the second race of the 14 race series and is scheduled for March 24-25. Homestead-Miami is the series’ first venture on a 1.5-mile track.
30 SEASON ENTRIES FILED FOR ACT'S LATE MODEL TOUR
Waterbury, VT - Thirty drivers have filed 2006 season entries for the American-Canadian Tour's 12-race Late Model series. The competitors will visit eight different tracks ranging in size from a one quarter-mile to nearly a mile. The Tour's most southern stop will be at the one-third mile Seekonk Speedway, a slightly banked but very round oval in Seekonk, MA, while the northern-most venue is in St-Croix, Quebec near Quebec City. The 5/8th mile Circuit Ste-Croix is a high-banked track with fast, long straight-aways. At either end of the straights are two tight, very different corners, which will present unique challenges to the competitors.
Fred LaGoy of Morrisonville, NY was the first to file a season-long entry for the Tour. The veteran racer opted to come out of semi-retirement after seeing the 2006 ACT schedule. Since then, Late Model racers representing all six New England states as well as New York and the Canadian province of Quebec have served notice they will race with ACT in 2006. Many are returning veterans such as five-time and defending champion, Jean-Paul Cyr, second generation racer Brent Dragon, 1992 title holder, Dave Whitcomb, 2005 runner-up Dave Pembroke and the ageless Joey Laquerre, to name a few. The young guns are represented by such notables as Roger Brown, Jamie Fisher, Patrick Laperle, Joey Becker and Scott Payea, among others.
Newcomers to the dance include Maine's Steve Reny, Bobby Baillargeon and Mike Collins from New Hampshire as well as Walter Sutcliffe from Connecticut.
The 2006 ACT Late Model Tour kicks off on Sat/Sun, April 29/20 at Thunder Road Int'l Speedbowl, Barre, VT with the eighth annual Merchants Bank 150. Cyr is the only driver in the previous seven events to repeat in the annual lid-lifter. Dave Pembroke from Montpelier is the defending race winner. Thunder Road will host two additional ACT Tour shows, both part of the $10,000 to-win ACTion Super Series, the Bond Auto Labor Day Classic 200 on Sat/Sun, Sept 2/3 and the annual New England Dodge Dealers Milk Bowl, Sept 30/Oct 1.
Other tracks on the 2006 slate include the 3/8ths mile Lee (NH) USA Speedway, White Mountain Motorsports Park, a ¼ mile high banked oval in N. Woodstock, NH, and Maine's Oxford Plains Speedway. Also, the D-shaped, half-mile semi-banked Airborne Speedway, Plattsburgh, NY and Quebec's slightly banked 7/8s mile Sanair Super Speedway tri-oval will each host an event.

New Poll Question: Your Favourite Cdn. Racing Event
We ran the results and some of your comments from the Tony Stewart / Daytona poll in our most recent issue of Inside Track.
I just replaced the Stewart poll with a new one (see the righthand column), asking our readers about their favourite Canadian racing event of the season. The list originally had 20 events on it, but we had to cut it down to 10 as that is what we are limited to by freepolls.com
By the way, we just received copies of our latest issue from the printer, so mailed copies are on their way to subscribers as I type this.
Corvettes Qualify Third and Fourth for Sebring 12-Hour
Courtesy GM Racing
SEBRING, Fla., March 16, 2006 - Corvette Racing's new Corvette C6.Rs qualified third and fourth in the GT1 class for Saturday's Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring, the season-opening round of the 10-race American Le Mans Series. Reigning GT1 co-champion Oliver Gavin turned the third quickest time in the No. 4 Compuware Corvette at 1:56.770 (114.070 mph) and three-time Sebring winner Ron Fellows was fourth fastest at 1:57.854 (113.021 mph) in the No. 3 Compuware Corvette.
The 20-minute qualifying session was interrupted by a red flag that limited the Corvettes to three flying laps. The GT1 pole went to the Aston Martin DBR9 of Pedro Lamy with a 1:55.286 lap time that surpassed the 1:57.052 track record set by Fellows in 2004.
"It's unfortunate that qualifying was cut short because we had three more hot laps that we were going to put on the tires before the start of the race," said Corvette Racing program manager Doug Fehan. "The red flag came out just at the wrong time, as it often seems to do in racing."
Recent performance adjustments in weight and restrictor sizes announced by series officials have affected the relative performances of the Corvettes and their competitors. The C6.Rs now weigh 121 pounds more than their rivals and have smaller intake restrictors.
"Last year we qualified on the pole and we didn't do that this year - no excuses," Fehan commented. "The lap times have been close throughout the practice and qualifying sessions. I give the sanctioning body high marks for being able to balance the performance differential between the Corvette and the Aston Martin."
Gavin perceived the impact of the performance adjustments on his qualifying run.
"We ran as hard as we could and that was the best we could produce," said the Briton, who qualified his yellow Corvette C6.R 14th overall. "The lap times were coming down and perhaps we could have run a bit quicker had the red flag not come out. It's just one of those things."
Traffic was a factor for Fellows: "I caught traffic four times in two laps, and then the red flag came out," the Canadian reported. "We just didn't get an opportunity to get a good one. The track did seem slippery, and that's something we'll have to address in the race to make sure that we have enough grip."
With warm temperatures and sunny skies in the forecast, the season-opening race promises to be another classic contest.
"Sebring is an unusual place because it changes from hour to hour," Fehan noted. "We know that when it gets hot, it's going to get slippery, and there will be a lot of cars on the track. That's why Corvette Racing focuses very hard on developing a setup that will perform well in a wide variety of conditions. We've spent the majority of our track time this week working on that."

AIM Autosport Launches Three-Car Formula Mazda Campaign
March 17 2006 (Woodbridge, Ontario): AIM Autosport will enter the 2006 Star Mazda Championship with a three-car line up. Drivers Rob Bunker, Daniel Herrington and Jay Poscente will spearhead AIM’s second season of Formula Mazda competition which begins this weekend at the 54th annual 12 Hours of Sebring.
Bunker, who has graduated to Formula Mazda from AIM’s Formula BMW programme, will drive car number 18 with sponsorship from Team Rennsport. The 17-year-old from Bridgewater, New Jersey; showed well last year, improving throughout the season and peaking at the final event of the year. He is well liked at AIM and his continued relationship with the team can only help his prospects this year.
A newcomer to AIM Autosport, 19-year-old Herrington of Winston Salem, North Carolina; will race car number 3. Another graduate of Formula BMW, Herrington tested with AIM last fall and convincingly showed his abilities. His sponsor, Bluetooth SIG will show off its technology on Daniel’s race car by developing a wireless helmet which will eliminate the wiring between the driver’s helmet and the car.
Ian Willis, AIM Autosport’s Formula Mazda Team Manager, is confident both Bunker and Herrington will fare well this year.
‘Rob will be a contender this year in the Star Mazda Championship as he has been quick and focused during off-season testing. He has adapted well to the faster Star Mazda car and I am pleased that he is entering his second season with us.
‘Daniel proved himself by setting some very impressive lap times. As we worked through various set ups at our Sebring pre-season two-day test, Daniel provided excellent feedback which helped us to find a fast, well-balanced car. This resulted in lap times that would have put us at the front of last year’s grid and race at Sebring.’
Rounding out AIM’s Formula Mazda line up is Jay Poscente who will drive the number 85, NDA car in the Star Mazda Masters Class (for drivers over 45 years of age). Poscente of Calgary, Alberta, is well known to Willis as they raced each other in the Canadian Pro Formula Ford series in the early 90s. Following a chance reunion at last year’s Mazda exhibition race in Trois Rivieres where Jay was racing sports cars, he expressed an interest in trying a Mazda.
Based on testing, after which Willis reported that Poscente had ‘too much fun and was impressively quick considering he had not been in a high-performance open-wheel car for many years,’ Poscente decided to join AIM Autosport and run a full season. He is not only looking to win the Masters Championship but also hopes to mix it up with his younger team mates.
NASCAR: Atlanta pit notes. Bobby Hamilton to start cancer treatment
"I will be back; I'm not quitting. I'm not that weak," Hamilton said. "It's just time for me to get out and start treatments and kick this thing."
Hamilton was diagnosed last month after the swelling from wisdom tooth surgery did not subside.
"A wisdom tooth saved my life," Hamilton said. "This thing's called head and neck cancer, but I don't have anything wrong with my head. (Ken) Schrader said he doubted that."
Hamilton made the announcement with his usual candor and bluntness, showing little emotion and remaining upbeat about his upcoming battle.
"I don't want to be labeled as a cancer victim," Hamilton said. "I'm a survivor or a patient. I'm not a victim; I don't like the sound of that. They don't act like it's going to be that big a deal; my body's so healthy it's killing 75 percent of the cancer cells as soon as they can find it, is what they're telling me."
Hamilton will begin treatments immediately at Vanderbilt University.
"To come back home to race is exciting," Hamilton Jr. said. "But the way it turned out just sucks, to be blunt. It's not what we want to experience, but that's life."
A NEW KING IN NASCAR: Michael Waltrip Racing announced Friday that it will team with Burger King and NASCAR champion Bill Elliott for a five-race schedule this season. Elliott will pilot the No. 00 Burger King Chevrolet at Chicago, New Hampshire, Indianapolis, California and Homestead.
"We're eager to return to NASCAR," said Russ Klein, chief marketing officer for Burger King. "This is a great way to reenter the sport, and we're eager to expand our role. We want to be in NASCAR NEXTEL Cup racing long-term. We're just taking things one step at a time."
Waltrip said the team plans to expand to a full-time NEXTEL Cup venture next season, running Toyotas. Waltrip said sponsorship and driver plans for next year were still up in the air. But for now, he's thrilled to have a veteran like Elliott behind the wheel.
"You can't win a race sitting on the couch at home," Elliott said. "I've done the full season, I'm over that. But I like the position I'm in now. I'm able to stay in the sport but still hang with Chase and do some other things. It's my chance to give back a little to the sport that's given so much to me."
Burger King also announced donations to both the Speedway Children's Charities and the National Motorsports Press Association.
Waltrip quotes of the day:
(On fielding Chevrolets for his team despite driving Dodges himself)
"I'm like Switzerland, I can drive anything. Chevrolet is the car to beat. They've won two of the first three races. When we were planning this project, in order to lure Mr. Elliott, we wanted to get the best car he could drive. Right now that appears to be Chevrolet. I'll stay in a Dodge, I suppose, but I am going to be in a Toyota truck later this year, and I've got a call in to Ford."
(On the Burger King mascot, The King) "The King commands respect, even if he has on tights."
(On whether Bill Elliott figures into next year's plans to run a full-time NEXTEL Cup schedule) "We're trying him out. We'll see how he develops. It's a driver development deal."
BILL LESTER DRIVING INTO HISTORY: Atlanta resident Bill Lester will make history during tonight's Georgia Power Qualifying session, when he will be the first African-American in 20 years to attempt to qualify for a NASCAR NEXTEL Cup race. Lester will pilot the No. 23 Waste Management car, fielded by Bill Davis Racing, in his attempt for Sunday's Golden Corral 500. Lester will also race in tonight's John Deere 200 Craftsman Truck race for BDR.
"I love Atlanta Motor Speedway; I love tracks like this. I'm in my hometown, I feel very comfortable here, and the city has embraced me," Lester said during a press -conference Friday to announce his three-race NEXTEL Cup schedule with Waste Management, a program termed the "Drive Into History". "I have extremely high confidence going into tonight based on our test at Kentucky."
Lester said he also hopes his presence in NASCAR helps propel the sport's diversity program.
"I think I can be a catalyst for change," Lester said. "Every time I bring a friend to the race, the immediately become a fan. It blows them away. It's never something they think they would like. But as more people of color realize there are drivers out there, as they are exposed to it more, things will change. When they see me race on network TV, that's going to be the catalyst for change."
Lester said he didn't see the lack of diversity in NASCAR as a racial divide, but rather as a matter of exposure and opportunity.
"Most kids in the inner city don't have the opportunity to go to the race track," Lester said. "They're exposed to stick and ball sports, music. Once you have that exposure, you have to be able to participate, and then that's when the financial aspect comes in. If you're not born in the sport and not exposed to it at a young age ... I'm one of the anomalies."
NASCAR President Mike Helton also addressed the diversity issue, saying, "We're proud of our diversity efforts in NASCAR, and although we didn't think there were any barriers there, the perception was there. Our diversity program is an ongoing effort, not an overnight fix, but we're proud of our efforts."
URBAN YOUTH LEARN IN ATLANTA: Four students from Philadelphia's Urban Youth Racing School (UYRS) will get a little hands-on training during this weekend's John Deere 200 Craftsman Truck race. Danny Colon, Shawnna Stanton, Kristopher Fuller and Nkosi Harmon, all from Philadelphia, will team with four Craftsman Truck teams as they participate in this intense internship-type program designed to educate and train today's urban youths through exposure to the automotive and motorsports industry. The teams hosting a UYRS member are Circle Bar Racing, Darrell Waltrip Motorsports, Morgan-Dollar Motorsports and Red Horse Racing.
Rick Crawford's Circle Bar Racing team has paired with UYRS student Danny Colon, and Crawford joked that Colon couldn't stay long at a Friday afternoon press conference because he had a lot of work left to do on the Circle Bar No. 14 Ford truck.
"This program really helps the kids expand their knowledge of NASCAR," Crawford said. "It teaches them little by little about the sport, the tools, the officials, everything. And then when they come into the shop, these kids know how to act and what to do. Every major city in the U.S. ought to have something like the Urban Racing School. It gives these kids direction, something missing in a lot of households today."
Would the Molson Grand Prix of Toronto be a better event if it included stock cars?
So far, 63% of respondents would like to see a variety of racing vehicles in action at the annual event on the temporary street course. Only 37% want it to be an 'open wheel' only affair.
If its customers' opinions mean anything, the Toronto promoter should be calling CASCAR immediately.
Will fans turn their back on the event when they realize that there are no Canadian racing series and no stock cars on the card?
I guess we'll find out....
NASCAR DODGE WEEKLY SERIES DIVISION II PREVIEW
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (March 17, 2006) – When NASCAR re-structured its championship point system for the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series in 2005, drivers at Nebraska’s I-80 Speedway and Iowa’s Adams County Speedway took notice. Under the new format, which continues in 2006, drivers can race at multiple tracks to collect points towards a NASCAR championship.
The two dirt tracks are located about 100 miles apart and feature same type of Super Late Model cars. Adding to the appeal, Adams County hosts its NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series events on Saturday nights while I-80 features Super Late Models on Sundays.
The result is a prime opportunity for area drivers to boost their chances for the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Division II and national championships, determined by a points tally of their best 16 finishes of the year. By racing more often, drivers can increase their odds of winning.
Chris Spieker, a 35-year-old Super Late Model driver from Massena, Iowa, took advantage of the system last season and won the $25,000 Division II championship. Spieker, a long-haul truck driver by trade, raced full-time at both tracks. He won the track championship at Adams County and, in the process, collected the most NASCAR points in Division II.
Ed Kosiski, the 1998 NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series national champion from Ralston, Neb., was a key rival for Spieker and is expected to contend for the title again. Kosiski plans to run the full season of Sunday races at I-80 Speedway, along with 10 Saturday night races at Adams County.
“That’s what I’m after,” said Kosiski of the Division II title. “The advantage of having two race tracks is that you’ve got double the chances of winning the Division.”
Winning the Division championship carries its own rewards, but also makes one eligible for the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series national title, which carries a $50,000 bonus. The 60 NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series tracks are divided into four Divisions – Division I, II, III or IV. Drivers at each track in each Division race under the same point system and the Division champion with the highest overall point total, based on their best 16 finishes, wins the national championship.
Kosiski missed out on the Division II title last year, by a narrow margin, partially because of engine problems that cost him precious positions and the NASCAR points lead at his home track.
“I feel good about our chances,” said Kosiski. “Our problems were because of some internal engine parts that were bad. We’ve got them fixed and I feel that we’re going to have a good year.”
The incentive to win is even higher for Kosiski, who drives a Dodge-powered car. As the series’ title sponsor, Dodge has posted additional awards for the highest-placing Dodges in the Division standings, in each Division. The top-finishing Dodge driver in each Division can win a $3,000 bonus – and an additional $25,000 if a Dodge driver wins the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series national championship.
Peyton Sellers, of Danville, Va., won the 2005 national championship while racing at South Boston (Va.) Speedway. Sellers, 22, was the youngest driver to win the national championship in series history.
Along with Adams County and I-80, other tracks in Division II include Altamont Motorsports Park in Tracy, Calif., Autodrome St. Eustache in St. Eustache, Quebec, Concord (N.C.), Motorsport Park, Edmonton International Raceway in Wetaskiwin, Alberta, Grandview Speedway in Bechtelsville, Pa., Lee USA Speedway in Lee, N.H., Myrtle Beach (S.C.) Speedway, Oglethorpe Speedway Park in Savannah, Ga., San Antonio (Tex.) Speedway, Shasta Raceway Park in Anderson, Calif., Spencer Speedway in Williamson, N.Y., Stockton 99 Speedway in Stockton, Calif. and Wall Township (N.J.) Speedway.
TIEMERSMA MOTORSPORTS: Sponsor Update
This season we would like to welcome back Wayfreight Trucking Services as the major sponsor of the #7 Wayfreight Monte Carlo of Derrick Tiemersma. We would also like to welcome back our associate sponsors: Castrol Oils, Victor Reinz Gaskets, Clevite Engine Parts, CRC Chemicals, Gates Belts and Hoses, Bosch Spark Plugs and Wix Filters.
New for 2006 Tiemersma Motorsports would like to welcome Exide batteries as an associate sponsor for all three cars in the Tiemersma stable.
Without all of these companies support the 2006 season for Tiemersma Motorsports would be an uphill battle.
In the mean time the three cars are coming together with the finishing touches being done. The #7 Limited Late Model of Tony Tiemersma is being scaled this week while the bodies on both the #7 and #67 of Derrick and Steve Tiemersma are done and ready for paint.
After paint the cars have to be scaled and then it is time for testing the cars and dialing in the cars for the 2006 race season. Tiemersma Motorsports is looking at a busy 2006 season as the Late Model scene in Ontario has a very busy schedule.
Thank you for supporting Tiemersma Motorsports and we hope to see you all out at the track some time this season.
Thank You
Mike Sutton // Crew Chief // Tiemersma Motorsports
